
Seafarers' Market Still Booming, But Mental Health Concerns Rise: Danica Crew Survey Highlights Key Trends
The maritime industry continues to be a seafarer's market, with wages increasing and employers vying for qualified crew. However, a recent survey conducted by Danica Crewing, a leading maritime recruitment agency, highlights a growing concern about the mental wellbeing of seafarers, along with other significant trends impacting the industry.
The 2024 Danica Crew Seafarers’ Survey, covering over 4,800 seafarers worldwide, reveals that wages for senior officers are still on the rise, although the rate of growth has slowed. This is attributed to rising costs and an increasing pool of available seafarers. However, the survey also highlights a persistent shortage of experienced officers, with a significant drop in those with 48 months or more seniority in the same company.
Mental Health Concerns on the Rise
One of the most alarming findings is the increasing number of seafarers reporting mental stress. A concerning 35% of respondents revealed experiencing mental stress during their last tenure, highlighting the need for greater support and awareness around mental health in the maritime industry. While companies are offering more mental health support services, the survey found that the percentage of seafarers who find these services useful has actually declined, suggesting a need for improvement in the quality and accessibility of mental health support.
Internet Access Now a Must-Have
The survey revealed that internet access onboard is now becoming commonplace, with 74% of seafarers having free access. This is a substantial increase from previous years, highlighting the growing demand for connectivity at sea, both for personal communication and professional development.
Training Effectiveness Questioned
While companies are investing more in training, the survey shows a disconnect between the volume of training offered and its perceived value by seafarers. The number of seafarers who find company-provided training useful has declined, indicating a need for training programs that are more relevant and tailored to the specific needs of seafarers.
Ukrainian Seafarers Face Unique Challenges
The ongoing war in Ukraine has created unique challenges for Ukrainian seafarers. The survey found that 22% of Ukrainian seafarers have stated they will not return to Ukraine, highlighting the uncertainty and difficulties they face.
Beyond the Numbers
The survey also sheds light on other key trends, such as a growing concern about bullying, discrimination, and harassment in the workplace. The survey found that the number of seafarers reporting these issues has doubled since 2019.
