Maritime Personality of the Week : Punit Oza, FICS, AFNI, LLB, M.Sc.

This week, Lloyd’s Maritime Institute proudly features Punit Oza as our Maritime Personality of the Week — a leader shaping the future of maritime education, nurturing the maritime talent, and mentoring maritime startups.

🔹 Who is Punit Oza ?

Punit is currently the founder and director of Maritime NXT, a platform dedicated to giving back to the industry through teaching and mentoring. He teaches on various maritime topics at Singapore Management University, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, MPA Academy and holds guest lectures in several other business schools around the world. His key focus is “Geopolitical Risks & their impact on Shipping Trade Flows,” a topic on which he hosts a monthly podcast with SeaTrade Maritime Podcast. He is also the current President of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and sits on the executive advisory board of three maritime related startups – Tathya, FrontM & HarborLab. He brings over 30 years of commercial & transformation experience with companies like Torvald Klaveness, blending it with his professional & legal qualifications.

🔹 His Key Contributions

Digital Transformation: Laid the foundation for Digital Transformation of Klaveness Dry Bulk & currently conducting workshops on Digital Transformation for Maritime SMEs. Nurturing Next Gen Talent: Teaching, training & mentoring the next generation of Maritime Talent in practical aspects such as Geopolitics & Trade, infusing passion & making them future-ready. Sharing Domain Expertise: Helping & enabling maritime tech startups to identify & solve practical industry pain points & thereby benefitting the entire ecosystem.

🔹 Training Effectiveness Questioned

While companies are investing more in training, the survey shows a disconnect between the volume of training offered and its perceived value by seafarers. The number of seafarers who find company-provided training useful has declined, indicating a need for training programs that are more relevant and tailored to the specific needs of seafarers.

🔹 Why His Work Matters

As a key player in the Maritime Ecosystem, Punit’s focus & contribution on the next generation of talent & technology is creating a positive impact. Having gathered considerable expertise for three decades in the industry, Punit has found a fantastic way to give back by focusing on the future talent and leading to restore the positive image of the industry, which will play a huge role in sustaining the success of the industry.
